8:01 am
grenades. our photographer has a rather large zoom lens. so he's not as close as it appears. there is the robot getting the grenades out of this building in san francisco. 19th and potrero. muni buses have been rerouted. this is quite a big deal for this area. this is one of the police officers here who is watching our crew. i have a feeling he's gonna make sid move in just a moment because -- because of the safety issue. again, grenades, apparently grenades that can explode have been found in a building on potrero avenue. the o whole area of san francisco is shut down as they take care of this problem. we'll let you know more about this as we -- >> hey, sal? >> yes. >> can you give us a sense on how busy this area is -- >> hold on. hold on. i couldn't hear you. >> can you give us a sense of what this area is like? is it residential? is it near buildings?
8:02 am
work buildings? this is potrero avenue. this leads down to san francisco general hospital right there. it parallels highway 101. we're showing you the map because the police officers are actually gonna make our crew move. so potrero avenue is one of san francisco's major streets. here we go. this will be the last picture from this area. in is sa busy street. muni lines come across it. you would see a lot of cars. >> would there be any alternatives for people who want to drive through the area. i would say highway 101 is an alternative. you can go down maybe bryant street getting down into the mission district. you can go down to south van ness instead of potrero. if you want to be on the other side of the freeway you can go to highway 280, interstate 280 and get, you know -- basically, it's a north/south route here in san francisco. they are making a move.
8:03 am
we have to go. we'll be back with more. >> all right. we'll continue to follow this story. these are explosives at 19th and potrero. robot in the building. we will -- i guess we're able to stay here. we can see the rebought moving right now. >> hey, sal, i gotta ask you a question. the whole block is blocked off to traffic. i haven't seen any people meandering around. do you know if evacuations have taken place? >> mike, they told -- they came in and they told people in this block to move. they also told all of the police officers in the area to duck be -- behind their squad scars unless they are a good distance away. the police officers were there -- were there. they actually found out the situation was more dangerous than thought. then they brought the robot in. to answer your question, mike, the people in that building in the nearby buildings have been evacuated. and also the -- we don't show
8:04 am
it here but a lot of the streets around there have been evacuated as well. >> we can see the robot there on the right side of your screen, making some kine of movement obviously trying to check out what these grenades are, whether they are potentially dangerous or could do some harm or damage. obviously the police are being extremely cautious. no word yet i assume on how these were discovered. >> no, we don't know that. we do know the way we heard it. we had a dispatch for fire crew, paramedics and police, which made us stop and pay attention. there's all kinds of people here -- you can see people are being held at a distance. they do have medics and fire on the scene in case the worst were to happen. there we go. this have parking control airs as well.
8:05 am
this is happening on potrero near 18th and 19th, so again -- but to answer your question, we don't know how they found out about this, but they were on the scene for -- they've been on the scene for about an hour and a half now. it looks like the robot is everyone mooing into the garage where the explosive -- moving into the garage where the explosive devices may and it looks like it's moving pretty cautiously. looks like a pretty technical device. >> sal, you keep saying grenades. is it grenades, plural? >> you know, i don't know. i know they are reportedly grenades. that's what we've heard from the police department. we don't know if they are in a box or a vehicle or where they are. but you can see that they are keeping people april way. obviously they are being very -- people away. obviously they are being very careful. i don't know if they have a way of knowing if these grenades
8:06 am
are alive or not. we have the robot that's trying to move them. i am not sure how long potrero will be closed. but it's not looking good for this area here. >> that will an problem potentially for a while. looks to be like a residential garage there. again, this is happening at -- on potrero between 18th and 19th. sal said this is normally an extremely busy area. there are police and parking enforcement officers blocking off this area. they've even advised the police to squat down below thes cars and our cameras are being put away. >> sometimes being out at the situations. usually you are see the bomb squad out there in those big suits. in this instance, at least from our perspective at this angle. haven't seen any of those gentlemen or ladies yet. just the robot in there.
8:07 am
maybe they are getting dressed down at the truck. obviously they brought out everyone to the scene. if it's that serious of a situation to bring out the bomb squad. the robot in the screen picking up some sort of october there. i can't quite tell from that if it's a bag or some type of a grenade in the bag. it looks like it is a bag. moving back to the truck area. >> yeah. it looks like -- it's a suspicious item and we'll presumably bring it back to the truck it was next to and we'll try to do some testing, whether it is live or. flammable or could cause any -- whether it is live or flammable or could cause any damage. it's pretty interesting to watch this unfold. you never know what can happen. that's why police are being so cautious. if you are on the area -- >> pea probably should ameant
8:08 am
this -- we probably should amend this, it's closest to 18th and potrero. that's-- that's where our camera man -- oh, good -- oh, my goodness! did you see that fall out? was that the grenade? >> something just fell out of the bag. >> this is -- you wonder why grenades are in a residential building. obviously this is sa dangerous situation. there's a gym next to the building called new generation health. this is one of san francisco's busiest streets. it doesn't look like it now. you can imagine why police are being so careful with -- with this -- with these grenades that have been found. if they go off, it could have been very dangerous to -- >> there it is. >> there it is. >> don't run over it! >> oh, gosh! >> maybe they don't see it. the front tire is on the
8:09 am
grenade. >> he's rolling over the grenade? are you kidding me here? >> it just rolled off the sidewalk, it looks like. >> wow. i wonder where the operator is in conjunction with the operator. they have a camera mounted on the robot, and they probably could not see the grenade next to the tire at that time. you can see -- i think the pin was still in it, too. again, we don't know for certain if this thing is live. >> we don't know for certain. obviously they are taking all precautions -- well, we don't know what they know, mike. but we know they are being -- that they are being cautious. and judging by the seriousness of the tone of the officers talking about, it i would say these they think these grenades possibly could be a hazard. >> there's all kinds of
8:10 am
grenades. there's smoke grenades that burn and produce smoke. there's ones that can produce shrapnel. small anyone grades, a -- a large grenade has a casualty radius of roughly 15 meters. that's why i would assume they are keeping people far away. this could be very dangerous and very hazardous for people facility area -- for people in the area. >> we saw it run over what definitely looked like a grenade. it's going backwards to try to retrieve it. >> would -- i would assume it's going to put the grenade back on it to get the stat physical. - - status.
8:11 am
this is a story that we are -- certainly bringing to you live and trying to explain it to you as it unfolds this this in front of us. >> sal, you mentioned 18th and potrero avenue, have you heard anything in regards to the muni and ring reboughted in the -- rerouted in the area. some of the -- >> some of the bus lines have been rerouted. they are on trolley. they are delayed in this area. no word if muni is gonna -- they are diesel. about 45 minutes ago, we found out that san francisco police had closed off potrero between 18th and 20th. they have kind of a wide birth here because of explosives found in a garage along potrero in an apartment billing in the garage there. police figured out what they
8:12 am
were and immediately called the bomb squad and shut down of the one of the busiest street. we were looking at it rolling over, it was kind of scary to watch. obviously people are being kept away. right now potrero avenue is shut down. it looks like another mini robot kind of rolled into the forefront of the screen. i don't know if -- if that gives police an extra perspective as they pick up this grenade. >> it looks like the sensor device is trying to bring it up and then do a test on it and then possibly dismantle it, so it's no longer a hazard but by don't know if this is only -- we don't know if this is the only grenade there. we do have a camera person on the scene. but they are dwight adistance away -- quite a distance away for safety reasons.
8:13 am
you can see the area cordoned off and absolutely no activity at this point in the area, other than this robot and police device and cars that are trying to make sure this comes to a safe conclusion. >> 18th and potrero, the entire area shut down to both vehicle an pedestrian traffic. one building there, a residential building has been evacuated. some other businesses in the area, sal mentioned a gym is out there. that's been shut down to people as this robot -- there you see the grenade makes its way to a police vehicle, some sort of garage -- kind of tank where they open up the door, drop it in. close it, drive it is to a safe location, test it to see if it is a line grenade and if it is, they will likely detonate it. >> you wonder how -- i just heard -- they are not sure if had -- if this is a real or
8:14 am
live grenade. as he look it up on one these -- on one of these satellite system. it's indeed that apartment building that we're looking at here. i'm just wondering how they discovered this because they discovered this at about 7:15 a.m. and then they got the bomb squad out there. near are the closures. potrero is closed between 19th and 18th is closed between hampshire and utah. and the muni buses are ring rerouted along potrero avenue. >> we know the grenade was in a bag. we saw it come out. we know it came from the garage. beknownst doe -- we don't know if it was a tip that came in or somebody was cleaning out the garage. it will be interesting to find exactly how police were alerted to this situation on the 600 block of potrero avenue.
8:15 am
that does happen. sometimes people store things and they move and new people come in and it looks like. robot is moving around and trying to pick up another item. it's amazing how accurate it can be with person -- >> sal, you hen mun -- you mentioned the lines -- >> i'm trying to figure that out. we're trying to figure out what those lines are. if you guys can fill in, i'm gonna look it up. >> this is why the san francisco police do the training and respond to the situations and they spend the money to do that and that's what they are doing here. they train, train, train and knew they are executing what
8:16 am
they've been trained so far. >> we've just gotten a statement from the san francisco police department. troy dangerfield does confirm bomb technicians on the scene to investigate the report of some suspicious devices but he does say we're not sure whether they are real or fake and he says potrero avenue has been closed between 189th street and 18 -- 19th street and 18th is closed. even the police are not sure if this is a real or fake grenade. but they are taking serious plea caution -- precaution. >> pretty much all of the vehicles taking up the entire block of potrero avenue. it looks like the bigger robot is going in to pick up something else. i'm not sure if that grenade fell out of the bag it picked up in the garage. we can't see it. >> and again, the grenades were
8:17 am
found, according to the san francisco police department about 7:15 this morning and -- but there's no word on how they were found and what led to the bomb squad being called in. but the technicians arrived just about 16 minutes ago. so we brought you this -- this -- these pictures, pretty quickly as the bomb squad arrived on the scene. this is 6:50 potrero avenue. all of the areas are blocked. this is a busy area. we've not seen many people walking around. we did see when the camera panned around on the side streets that the people were standing by and the police were monitoring next to them so they did not come close to the scene at all. these are two robots that are being coordinated to try to pick -- pick up anymore of these -- any more of these devices. they are being taken away and will be examined to determine what exactly they are made of at this point. >> here it comes.
8:18 am
>> yeah. it looks like it's lifting up another -- it can be -- it could be another grenade there. >> we're seeing the smaller robot just in front of it, appears to be providing another angle for the operator of larger robot that has the object in its grasp making sure to take every precaution as possible as they are dealing with this. >> all right. so-- i'm just chiming in here. several people have called in and e-mailed in and tweeted me. it's at 33 ashbury and the 9 san bruno that run on potrero avenue. the 9 san bruno is one of the busiest truck lines. the trolley, the 33 ashbury is not love -- is not moving because it's on the electrical lines. i also found out the building that we're looking at is not a gym but a health clinic from
8:19 am
san francisco general hospital which is just about three or four blocks away from this scene at 18th and potrero. >> the information i have it's a family planning clinic connected to the san francisco general hospital and not a gym. there is some question about whether this could be part of an anti abortion group trying to threaten or attack that family planning clinic. so that's -- that's taking it to a different level of whether this could be a live grenade and potentially an attack on this family planning clinic which there have been some other attacks in other parts of the bay area and other parts of the you can. it look like the robot has just put another grenade back up into the tank, the device there. the truck -- on the -- on the truck there. and is safely depositing it to be tested. >> two grenades now.
8:20 am
we have two grenades placing in the -- being placed in the truck. we'll see whether it goes down and picks up a third device that may have fallen out of that paper bag or if it goes back to the garage. pretty amazing to see. this is live on our air, knowing that this is what they train for, that operator, again, precisely picking up these grenades. the pressure to do this operation, not knowing, again, if this thing is live or not. >> one of our editors just looked back at the paper bag that the robot initially pick the up and said there were four grenades that fell out. it looks like two have already been retrieved. so obviously there would be another two to be retrieved. the robot still has a little bit of work to do. you can see it moving in. it obviously has a camera mounted on it, so the operators can see -- can see where the other devices are and can grab them and put them in.
8:21 am
they are working quite efficiently. i know the photographer had panned down to the right. there was a mobile command center and that's my assumption that the operate he of this robot is watching, probably on multiple screens, different angles that the camera is providing. the camera on the bigger one and on the smaller one, that you see on the front there, on potrero avenue. two grenades now in the tank. according to our eddieder, four -- editor four? >> four. >> there's number three coming up. >> on of our viewers called in and said that -- that being a military man he recognizes those ren grades as world war ii era grenades. this is one of our -- according to one of our viewers. he says they are pretty stable once the pin is pulled before after that they begin to
8:22 am
deteriorate. the police obviously are being very careful with these devices putting them in the back of this vehicle. >> we've heard reports of this before where sometimes previous owners will just leave various devices in a garage and then move out realizing that they left them's behind -- left them behind. so it could be a rather innocuous reason why they are there. they could potentially be dangerous. sanfrancisco police have told us they don't know if they are real or fake but they are obviously taking extreme plea caution done to make sure there's no harm done. extreme precaution but moving fairly quickly to get these things and devices out of the street and into the -- into this tank and then drive them out of there. according to lieutenant troy dangerfield, they arrived on scene just about a half hour ago to investigate this.
8:23 am
and here we are at grenade number three being put in the tank. i think they are moving quite quickly to remove the -- to resolve the situation out there. >> it is such a busy area and they don't want to disrupt people there. but safety comes first to try to keep things under control. >> this is happening on potrero between 19th and 18th in the 600 block. 650 potrero avenue this -- avenue is the garage where the grenades were found. there were four of them in the bag. the devices put -- the robot has put three of them back into the truck there on the right of the screen. >> for those of you just joining us, about 15 minute the ago, when we first -- minute ago, when we first had this live picture up, this robot was carrying some kind of paper bag and was bridging that bag with the bag -- bringing that bag with the -- and that san francisco atlantis truck. in the process of bringing the
8:24 am
bag over, the bag opened up and grenades fell on the street. in fact, the robot had actually run over the grenades live or on air -- live on our air and then we brought back -- >> we do new video? >> i think it's video of the -- that the robot -- >> here it was. this is about 15, 20 minutes ago. there they go. i think the operator at that time realized it but didn't see where the grenades went. but we saw it on our air and the front right tire of that large irrobot ran over one of the grenades and kicked it to the side. >> i have to tell you, mike, when i saw -- when that happened, the thing rolled over, the grenade, i was thinking oh, my goodness. i love live tv but not like this. >> and then you said the world war ii viewer calmed in --
8:25 am
>> what you are looking at is the wheel running over the grenade and on the left are live pictures of the two robots from the bomb squad trying to retrieve the fourth and final grenade as -- as far as we know. >> i want to ask the directors if -- at some point if we could put up the map just to show people where this is. i do have a map. i-- we're kind of zoomed in tight here but this is potrero avenue just a few blocks away. there it is. just a few blocks away from general hospital. you can see on the map there. it's right next to highway 101. potrero avenue. a lot of people have bailed on 101 and just used po ver row as an alternate. it runs this front of the general hospital and 24th street in san francisco which is obviously one of the biggest streets in the city. the munis abouts, lines 33 runs in there. it's a busy street that's been shut down for more than an hour because of this police
8:26 am
activity. >> and sal, the -- do they bring the buses over and they reroute them? >> well, what muni tries to do, on the trowelly -- trolley buses, what they try to do is, they try to have bus bridges, mike, in between where they have to stop. that's a huge delay. the 9 san bruno is not a trolley bus. it's a diesel bus. so buses could go around the block for a few blocks and get back on the route. but the 3, can't do that. >> got it. got it. >> but the 343 can't do that -- 33 can't do that. >> it's 8:26. >> they -- it looks like they have two devices of pinchers, if you will, that can come at it from different angles. we can't exactly see where the fourth grenade is on the ground. it looks like they are trying
8:27 am
to come at it from a possible possible angles to grab it and then put it in the truck at this money -- at this point. they almost like like lego -- look like lego devices or some kind of sophisticated toys. but obviously they are expensive device that help the bomb squad and help deep officers safe -- keep officers safe and remove these potentially dangerous items. >> it looks like the bigger robot heading back to maybe where the garage is open. >> yeah. >> >> the situation -- in situations like this, they want every angle possible. as we saw, they didn't have one angle there when they ran over the grenade, just after the 8:00 hour here.
8:28 am
>> but fortunately, that did not lead to any major problems. but this is, again, just unfolding. live for you on our television, on ktvu. the-- they are attempting to retrieve several grenades, again, not known if they are real or fake in a garage in san francisco and potrero avenue the bomb squads are working to get the final grenade from the safe and remove it so it can be removed from the scene. >> it looks like they are retreating now a little bit. so maybe there was just three in there and there was a fourth in the garage and they will poke around a little bit to see what they can fi. we're not quite sure -- they can find. we're not quite sure if the paper bag was in garage, whether it was on its own, sitting on a chair. when we started to watch these pictures live, the paper bag was pretty much on its way out.
8:29 am
>> right. it looked like it was on the front left corner of the garage, with odds and ends like most people have in their garage. >> i just found out -- we have an overview of the area. i want to tell people where this is it -- where this is in san francisco. the suspicious device was found near 19th and potrero, a few blocks away from general hospital. you can see northbound 101, it kine of curves, that's why they call it hospital curve there. it's right next to the freeway. the police are on the scene. we have these live pictures and we'll have more on this and the rest of moat moot when we come back right -- rest of "mornings on 2" when we come back right after this. we'll be back.
8:30 am
8:31 am
8:32 am
once again, we want to give you an update that four grenades were found in a garage 234 san francisco in the 600 block of potrero avenue. this is video of the bomb squad robot that's been working for the last half hour to remove those grenades. they were originally in a bag and as you can see, the bag was being lifted up by the robot and then the grenades fell out. the-- the robot has had to very carefully grab each of those grenades and put them into the police truck. there are -- four of them, we don't know if they are real or fake but we've had reports they certainly look look -- look like something from the world war ii area. we have a crew on the scene or on the way to the scene. and also the police lieutenant is on his way to the scene and we'll doesn't to follow this and give you an update shortly.
8:33 am
>> again, this happening in the 600 block of potrero, 18th and -- potrero. the police were called out initially -- we're in the sure why they were culled out but possibly to those explosive device found in the garage on the 600 block of potrero avenue. once they moved out, they have moved quickly. they've been using two robots. a larger one there that grabbed the bags and once the grenades fell out of the bag, a smaller robot came in with the camera attached to the top of it to give the robot operator a perspective of the different angle. it picked up the grenades with the grass of the -- i am not sure what they call it. >> i call them pinchers. >> pinchers -- and putting them in -- >> and -- we -- we have found

out about muni, the 33 ashbury is severely delayed. the buses are staking up at either end of this closure. people have just been getting off the bus and just walking around this closure. the 9 san bruno which is a diesel bus that's been driving around. the 9 express runs on the freeway at this time. so that's not affected. the muni closureses and also the street closures have put a lot of traffic -- i was looking at the 101 picture just a little while ago. we have a picture of 101 and a lot of people are on that. so northbound 101 has become the alternate route. i also got a couple of suites -- tweets. people are still not being let into this area in san francisco. >> all right. you said it earlier, a busy morning in san francisco. fires in the castro district and a suspicious device or a

8:43 am
there was a call about some grenades by the residents here in the 600 block of po ter row. we're underring that the owner of the -- we're understanding that the owner of the building was 29 and passed away and they were cleaning -- 92 and passed away and they were cleaning out, the family was and they found these grenades. and they called the police immediately. so as a precaution, the bomb squad is out there. they are also checking the house for -- for any other things that might be around and left as well. >> lieutenant, mike mibach here. can you tell us -- you said five to six grenades. when you get the grenades secure, where do you take them? >> i'm not sure where they take them and i'm not for sure where they -- whether they are real or not. they are gonna -- gonna -- gonna dispose of them and they are cordenning often the two- block area of potrero. there's no one in the building.
8:44 am
>> down how long they are gonna keep that -- dune how long they are gonna keep the area cordoned off? >> well, they are gonna make sure there is -- there's nothing inside. but they are going to take their time and be safe about it. >> were people actually evacuated from that building on the 600 block of potrero. the person they were supposed to be there is not there, from my understanding. so the relative that was kleeing the -- cleaning the garage was the only one that was there. >> can you talk a little bit about -- we say this unfold live on our air, we saw two robots, a bigger one, a smaller one. can you take us to the process. i don't know if san francisco police officers a in bomb suits approach the garage first and then the robots. how does the process work. i'm not a bomb tech but these
8:45 am
officers are and they know how to these dings safely. -- things safely. the robots are highly trained to do this. >> we're looking live at newschopper2 of a police truck, it looks like and several officers but a dog as we. so lieutenant, i'm managing the dog has the role of sniffing out and seeing if there are any other suspicious device? >> absolutely. that's what the dog is here for. and then that -- and they are trained to let the officers know everything is safe. >> we've heard of this situation before, where people have moved or passed on -- do you know what is being done to determine if they are live or fake?
8:46 am
>> well, they are speaking to relatives and they are trying to see if where they come from, and if they are live. >> again, let, you think that area could be hope -- lieutenant, you think that area could be opened up in the next hour. >> i don't want to say. i-- >> and is sounds like the relative is deeing coop rave rah tib -- cooperative -- relative is being cooperative. >> oh, yeah, they called police immediately when they found the devices. >> thank you for your time, lieutenant. the previous homeowner had passed away, a family member was cleaning out the garage, found what looked like five to six grenades in a box in the garage, called the police right away and they had been on the scene since.
8:47 am
they removed the grenade-like devices. they don't know if they are real or fake but now they will be sweeping the entire home and they will keep the area blocked off for the immediate future. >> i want -- i want to see -- i'm talking on the two-way to our chopper. you can pull out just to see what traffic effect this is having on the area. as i mentioned, this is one of san francisco's busiest streets and he is pulling back here. can you tilt up for me. i want to see the closure, i want to see what this is doing here to traffic on potrero avenue. you have to think with this busy street going on two hours now, some of the side streets and freeways have really taken a beating because of it. as we widen out, you can see it doesn't look all that bad close to the scene. i would be interested to see maybe later on, we can look near general hospital which is
8:48 am
basically the chapter -- chopper sitting at -- right there at 4th. i bet it's a mess for people coming off the freeway there, they get on potrero, and then there is a big closure. >> that's 101 -- i believe that's north. the traffic heading down here looks like it's moving nicely. this is the area with where the grenade-like devices were found. sal mentioned it's a very busy street so it's inevitable to have an impact -- impact on traffic. >> and as the lieutenant said, he doesn't know when the 600 block and the -- and the block surrounding it are gonna reopen -- reopen it. now they are using the dogs to go in and sweep that one garage and actually the entire building i would imagine. >> yeah. it looks like they still have quite a few -- it looks look there is an ambulance there on

the right of the screen as well as that police truck with all of the equipment on it that the lieutenant was telling us about earlier. we did see the dog -- they did put the robots away. we saw them put them away in the truck. they've been removed as well as the grenades. but they want to make sure that sears -- make sure there's nothing else in that home that could be dangerous. >> and on the left side of the screen, that's where they were removing the grenades which were initially in a paper bag and placed them in the truck. it's hitched to a device there. not a device another tank. where -- where they put the tank -- they were haul them away to some area and evaluate and most likely detonate them. the fact that the -- the lieutenant mentioned that a 92- year-old man had owned the building, that makes you think maybe he was a world war ii buff and we had we had a viewer
8:50 am
call in who said it look thed like world war 2 -- looked like world war ii devices. >> it just layses the question -- raises the question, why would you keep those? there are plenty of ear items you can put on display. >> this brings up a good point. they made replica grenades. up to a little while ago. you can -- up until a little while ago, cow buy them and then -- the police thought twice about that because if these are replicas there is a local whole lot of manpower wasted on these grenades. obviously you don't know -- when you come upon it, you don't know if it's a replica. some of these replicas look real. >> we'll continue to follow this. we're gonna take a short break.
